SR-22 Insurance After a DUI

After a DUI, one of the first things you’ll be concerned about is whether or not you’ll be able to drive again legally.  While it will be difficult to get traditional insurance, you’ll often be able to get a special type of DUI insurance.

When your license has been suspended due to DUI, you may be able to get SR-22 insurance, a special type of DUI insurance, to allow you to get back on the road again.   SR-22 insurance is different than traditional insurance.  SR-22 insurance is offered for drivers who are considered “high risk” and is often used as DUI insurance.

SR-22 insurance is monitored by your local Department of Public Safety or Department of Motor Vehicles.  When you have SR-22 insurance, you usually have to keep it for three years before you can switch from SR-22 to regular insurance.  During that time, if you have any lapse in your SR-22 insurance, the company is required to notify the appropriate state office.  When your SR-22 insurance isn’t kept current, your license will be suspended until the DUI insurance is reinstated.

In order to purchase SR-22 insurance, you’ll have to shop around.  Not every insurance carrier offers SR-22 coverage.  You should also prepare to spend more money to be covered by an SR-22.  Because it’s designated for high-risk drivers, the SR-22 coverage costs more.

SR-22 coverage will vary based on where you live.  In some states SR-22 is only offered as DUI insurance.  In other places, SR-22 covers a wide range of problems from DUI insurance to insurance for people with many tickets or other driving convictions.

When you have SR-22 insurance, you need to make sure to find out your local laws about proof.  In some states you’ll have to fill out a special form about your SR-22 that shows you have DUI insurance.  In other cases you’ll have to bring only your documentation from the company covering your DUI insurance.

When you’ve got a DUI on your record, you don’t have to be forced to a life dependent on public transportation.  Having SR-22 insurance will get you back on the road and feeling independent again.

However, it’s critical that you become familiar with SR-22 rules and regulations for your state.  If you’re going to go to the trouble of purchasing a DUI insurance policy, you need to make sure you’re following the proper procedures.  While SR-22 insurance can be costly and has regulations, it can give you back your freedom.
