An SR-22 insurance policy is a specific type of policy normally required as a condition of getting your license back after a DUI related offense.
It's called an SR-22 because that is the form required by the DMV from your insurance provider to reinstate your drivers license (form sr-22).
By issuing the form to the DMV on your behalf the insurance company is guaranteeing the DMV that they will let them know immediately if for any reason they are not supplying the required insurance coverage for you.
Once they notify the DMV of this, the DMV will promptly suspend your drivers license for failure to maintain the minimum required coverage. The only way to get your drivers license reinstated after that is to renew your coverage with your high risk auto insurance provider who will then issue another SR-22 form to the DMV.
Once the DMV has the new SR-22 you'll pay a reinstatement fee, then they will reinstate your drivers license.
