SR-22 insurance coverage in California is a certificate of insurance filed by the insurance company to the department of motor vehilces. Basically this is a requirement in order to restore your CA drivers license after a drunk driving offense.
The SR-22 is an agreement between the California DMV and the insurance provider stating that the insurance provider must immediately notify the DMV if for any reason your insurance lapses. Because the CA dmv has made it a requirement for you (after a DUI related offense) to maintain financial responsibility coverage at all times or your driving privilege will be suspended.
So when the DMV is notified by your insurance carrier that your coverage has lapsed, the DMV will then suspend your driving privileges and you will have to file another sr-22 and pay a reinstatement fee to reinstate your driving privileges.
An SR-22 may be obtained by contacting an insurance provider (authorized to write SR-22 policies) for the state of California.
When you make your payment to the insurance company, they will then issue you an SR-22 either by filing directly with the DMV or giving you the SR-22 certificate to file with the DMV yourself.
