Alabama Non Owner SR22 Insurance Information

DUI laws and penalties, fines, license suspension, sr22 filing

The State of Alabama requires certain drivers to purchase SR22 insurance. If you have been caught providing false proof of insurance, have an unsatisfied judgment against you, or have lost your driver's license because of a major conviction (such as a DUI), then you will likely be required to carry SR22 insurance.

If you do have to file an SR22, and you do not own a vehicle, you will need to purchase a special SR22 insurance policy known as "non-owner SR22 insurance."

A non-owner SR22 insurance policy is an insurance policy issued for persons who drive but do not own the insured vehicle.

Non-owner SR22 insurance is similar to a regular SR22 insurance policy, except that it covers liability for you as a driver, without covering the vehicle you drive. A non-owner SR22 policy only covers other drivers and their vehicles.

In Alabama, the vehicle you are driving will still need to be covered by another insurance policy, so if you are driving someone else's vehicle, you might want to verify that it is insured.

Non-owner SR22 and Ignition Interlock

Alabama requires drivers to install an ignition interlock device in their vehicles in the following instances:

  • First Offense DUI with a BAC of 0.15 or higher
  • First Offense DUI with a child age 14 or younger in vehicle
  • Second or Subsequent DUI

If you are required to install an ignition interlock in your vehicle, you will not be able to get a non-owner SR22 policy.

How to Get Non-owner SR22 Insurance

Alabama requires SR22 insurance coverage for 3 years, so it is important to find a policy (and a price) that you can live with. An SR22 policy, even a non-owner policy, can be expensive, so it is important to shop around and compare rates.

Alabama non-owner SR22 insurance must be purchased from an insurance company that is authorized to do business in the State of Alabama. Rest assured that all of the insurance companies in our network are authorized to sell insurance in the state of Alabama:
