What is Connecticut SR22 Insurance?

SR22 Insurance is a financial responsibility certificate on your driver’s license which is separate from your automobile insurance. Note: The SR22 Certificate must be transmitted electronically by your insurance provider to the DMV. The DMV will not accept facsimiles or photocopies of your SR-22 filing.

Please note that in the State of Connecticut, Insurance companies notify the Department of Motor Vehicles of any cancellation or lapse of insurance regardless if you are required to carry SR22 Insurance or not.

Do I need Connecticut SR22 Insurance if I do not own a car?

To reinstate your driver's license you will need what is referred to as a Non Owners SR22 Insurance policy. This is an insurance filing for individuals that do not own a car or have regular access to one and covers up to the liability limits purchased. In Connecticut the state minimum requirements are as follows:

  • Bodily Injury Liability: covers death and recovery expenses, medical costs etc for the victim of the crash (this does not cover you or anyone else in the car with you)
  • $40,000 per accident
  • $20,000 per person
  • Property damage liability covers any damage to property such as vehicle or fence
    $10,000

How long am I required to carry Connecticut SR22 Insurance?

The typical length of coverage to carry SR22 insurance is 3 years. You should be aware that States and judges have the ability to extend or shorten the length of time you may be required to carry SR22 Insurance. Pay close attention to the information you receive from the DMV; it contains important information you need to be aware of. If at any time you are unsure, ask your attorney or call the State of Connecticut Insurance Department at 860-297-3800.

What is the process to reinstate my driver license?

When your license has been suspended due to a DUI conviction, you will want to do the following:

  • Speak with your attorney.
  • Call the Connecticut DMV Suspension Unit at 860-263-5720.

In addition to the steps outlined by the DMV Suspension Unit, you will also have to pay a $125 reinstatement fee. If you have 3 DUI Convictions, your license will be permanently revoked.

What is a Connecticut Administrative Hearing?

When you have been convicted of a DUI, there are two separate proceedings, the Administrative Per Se through the DMV and the Criminal penalties through the court. We recommend contacting a Connecticut attorney specializing in DUI cases and they can assist you with the Administrative Per Se proceedings as well as the criminal proceedings.

You have the right to request an Administrative Hearing within seven days of receiving the Notice of Suspension. It is important and imperative to read all the information sent to you by your attorney and the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Before the final date to request an Administrative Hearing, you must contact the Administrative Per Se Unit which can be reached Monday thru Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 860-263-5204. You can also contact them if you have already scheduled a hearing and need to reschedule for good cause.
