Louisiana Non Owner SR22 Insurance Information

DUI laws and penalties, fines, license suspension, sr22 filing

The State of Louisiana requires certain drivers to carry SR22 insurance for a specified period of time. This requirement affects DWI offenders; those who have refused to submit to a chemical alcohol test; and those with an accident judgment against them.

If a person is required to carry SR22 insurance, and he or she does not own a vehicle, then he or she will need to buy non-owner SR22 insurance. If you have a non-owner SR22 policy and you get into an accident, your non-owner policy will cover damages done to other involved drivers and their vehicles, but it will not cover damage done to you or your own vehicle.

Louisiana requires SR22 insurance for a period of 3 years. This can seem like a very long time if you are paying a very high price for your insurance. It is important to shop around and find the lowest SR22 rate that you can. Even non-owner rates can be steep. You can compare the best rates available in Louisiana by entering your zip code here:

Louisiana Non-Owner SR22 Insurance and Ignition Interlock Law

If you have been convicted of a subsequent offense DWI, or a first offense DWI that involved serious bodily injury, or a first offense DWI with a child passenger, then you will be required to install an ignition interlock device in your vehicle.

This becomes complicated if you do not own a vehicle. The truth is that you will likely need to own a vehicle in order to fulfill the ignition interlock requirements, and this also means that you will not qualify for non-owner SR22 insurance. Instead, you will need an SR22 owner's certificate.
