Many states require those who have had their driver's licenses suspended for drunk driving to purchase SR22 insurance as a condition for driver's license reinstatement. Montana is not one of these states. There is no SR22 insurance requirement in Montana.
In SR22 states, a "non-owner SR22 insurance certificate" allows DUI offenders who do not own a vehicle to get their driver's license reinstated.
In general, Montana residents should not have to worry about SR22 insurance or non-owner SR22 insurance.
However, if you live in Montana, but you get a DUI / DWI in another state, that state may require you to file an SR22 form with their MVD. If this is the case, you will need to research the SR22 laws in the state where your DUI happened. Also, if you get a DUI in Montana, and you then move to another state that does require SR22 insurance, you will likely need to file an SR22 form in that state. SR22 laws vary significantly from state to state, so if a state is telling you that you need SR22 insurance, be sure to directly contact the MVD in that state. They will be able to answer your questions.
