In the State of Tennessee, if your driver's license is suspended because of a DUI (Driving under the Influence), you will be required to purchase SR22 insurance in order to get your driver's license reinstated.
If you do not own a vehicle, and do not have regular access to a vehicle, you will want to ask your insurance company about non-owner SR22 insurance.
When you purchase SR22 insurance, your insurance company files an SR22 form with the Tennessee Department of Safety. (If you purchase non-owner SR22 insurance, your insurance company will file a non-owner SR22 form.)
This form proves to the DOS that you are insured for the minimum liability limits required by law. This way, the State knows that you will be financially responsible in the event that you are involved in an accident in the future. If your SR22 insurance is canceled, then your driver's license will be suspended again.
Tennessee requires SR22 insurance for up to five years. (However, if you keep an SR22 on file for three years within a five year period, your SR22 requirement may be canceled.)
If this was your first offense DUI and you had high BAC, or if this was a subsequent DUI offense, then you will be restricted to ignition interlock driving for six months.
In order to fulfill this ignition interlock requirement, you will need regular access to a vehicle, and this will disqualify you from the non-owner SR22 insurance option. At least for the duration of your ignition interlock requirement, you will need to file a traditional SR22 form.
Your non-owner SR22 insurance must be provided by an insurance company licensed through the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance. You can access these companies by clicking below and completing our online quote form:
