The State of Wyoming requires certain drivers to purchase SR22 insurance and to file an SR22 form with the DOT. For example, if you are convicted of DWUI (Driving While Under the Influence), you will be required to file an SR22 in order to get your license reinstated.
If you have an SR22 requirement, but do not own or have access to a vehicle, you can satisfy this requirement with non-owner SR22 insurance. In this case, your insurance company would file a "non-owner SR22 form" with the DOT.
The SR22 form proves to the State that you will be financially responsible in the event that you are ever at fault in a future accident. If your SR22 policy is ever canceled, your insurance company is required to notify the DOT.
Wyoming requires DWUI / DUI offenders to install ignition interlock devices in their vehicles. (The ignition interlock requirement can last from six months for a first offense to a lifetime requirement.) Because one has to have regular access to a vehicle in order to install an ignition interlock device in it, a driver with an ignition interlock requirement cannot qualify for non-owner SR22 insurance.
Note: The SR22 form must be filed directly by your insurance company, so be sure your insurance company will do that for you.
