What is Colorado SR22 Insurance?

In the State of Colorado, SR22 Insurance is defined as a rider to an insurance policy notifying the State that you have acquired an auto insurance policy that at least meets the State's minimum insurance requirements. The SR22 Insurance form is either filed directly with the Colorado DMV by your insurance provider or you may file it by going to the following location:

Do I need SR22 Insurance if I do not own a car?

If your driver’s license has been suspended, cancelled, denied or revoked, in order to reinstate your driving privileges, you will need SR22 Insurance, even if you do not own a vehicle. There are two types of SR22 Insurance, Operator’s Insurance and Non-Owners SR22 Insurance.

Operator’s Insurance is for individuals that own a vehicle and are proving financial responsibility. Non Owner’s SR22 Insurance is a liability only policy indicating future financial responsibility and allows you to get your driver’s license reinstated even if you do not own a car.

How long am I required to carry my Colorado SR22 Insurance?

After being convicted of a DUI, the State of Colorado will require you to carry SR22 Insurance for a period of three years from the date of your license reinstatement or the issuance of an interlock restricted license. SR22 Insurance can be expensive, especially if you chose the wrong provider. Make sure that the insurance carrier you partner with will file the SR22 form for you or provide one to you for you to file directly with the DMV.

What is the process to reinstate my driver's license in Colorado?

Once the conditions of your revocation, suspension, denial or cancellation of your driver’s license have been satisfied, you can begin the reinstatement process.

1. Identify your eligibility date and specific reinstatement requirements. This would have been communicated to you at your Administrative Hearing or via the mail. If you are unable to locate the information, complete the Colorado request for reinstatement form and submit it online for an e-mail response or you can call the Customer Service Unit at 303-205-5613.



2. For mail in applications, complete the Application for Reinstatement and mail the completed application along with a check or money order made out to the Department of Revenue for $95 and requested specific requirements (i.e. evidence of insurance, SR22, etc.) to the following address:

3. Mail the above information 30 – 60 days before your eligibility date. This allows the Department of Revenue plenty of time to process your information and get it back to you timely.



4. Allow up to 20 business days after mailing the complete application before contacting the Department of Revenue.



5. Once all information has been received, verified and processed, a Letter of Clearance will be mailed to the address you gave on the application.
