North Carolina DWI Class Requirement for DWI Offender

In North Carolina, individuals convicted of a DUI must complete a substance use assessment and then either an education or treatment program based on the assessment’s results. If the breath test results are above 0.14%, or if the assessment identifies substance use issues, the offender will be referred to a treatment program. Otherwise, they may be directed to an education program.

The primary education program available for DUI offenders in North Carolina is the Alcohol Drug Education Traffic School (ADETS), which is designed for those without a diagnosed substance use disorder but who are considered at risk. This program uses the “PRIME For Life” curriculum, which focuses on preventing alcohol and drug-related issues and promoting healthier choices (NC DHHS).

North Carolina does not recognize online DUI classes to satisfy court or state requirements unless there is prior written authorization from the state authorities. Thus, all required classes must be attended in person unless explicit permission for online participation has been granted (Adaptive Skills Court).
