Virginia DUI Class Requirement for DUI Offenders

In Virginia, DUI offenders are required to complete the Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program (VASAP), which includes several key components:

Intake and Assessment: Offenders must undergo an intake session where they are assessed for substance abuse issues. This session helps determine the specific education or treatment program required.
Education: The basic education program includes at least 20 hours of classes, typically spread over 10 weeks. These classes focus on the impact of alcohol and drugs on driving abilities and personal health, as well as strategies for making safer choices.
Treatment: If the assessment indicates a need for further intervention, offenders may be required to participate in a more intensive treatment program. This can include additional hours of education, counseling sessions, and ongoing monitoring.
Probationary Oversight: Offenders are usually placed under probationary oversight, which involves regular check-ins with a case manager to ensure compliance with all program requirements. This includes attending all assigned classes, passing drug and alcohol tests, and complying with any additional court-ordered conditions.
Ignition Interlock Device: Many offenders are required to install an ignition interlock device on their vehicles. This device prevents the car from starting if it detects a certain level of alcohol on the driver’s breath.

The cost for VASAP ranges from $250 to $300, plus additional fees for the 20-hour course and any required ignition interlock device installation and maintenance. Attendance at all sessions is mandatory, and failure to comply can result in further legal consequences, including the possibility of jail time or extended license suspension.
