Massachusetts DUI Class Requirement for DUI Offenders

In Massachusetts, DUI offenders are required to complete specific educational programs as part of their penalties. Here are the key requirements:

  1. First-Time Offenders:
    • 24-Hour DUI Education Class: First-time offenders must complete a 24-hour DUI education class. This program focuses on the consequences of impaired driving and ways to change driving behavior.
    • 1-Hour Victim Impact Panel: In some cases, first-time offenders may also be required to attend a Victim Impact Panel, where they hear from victims of drunk driving incidents about the impact on their lives.
  2. Additional Programs for Various Offenses:
    • National Safety Council (NSC) / Massachusetts Driver Retraining Program: This program aims to change drivers’ behavior behind the wheel and is often required for those with repeated driving issues.
    • State Courts Against Road Rage (SCARR): Intended for younger drivers with serious violations, this course educates them on the consequences of dangerous driving and how to handle such scenarios.
    • Driver Attitudinal Retraining: Required for certain Junior Operator License/permit suspensions, focusing on altering the driver’s attitude towards safe driving.
    • Drug or Alcohol Counseling and/or Education Program: Offenders may need to attend approved drug or alcohol counseling and education programs.
