Nebraska Non Owner SR22 Insurance Information

DUI laws and penalties, fines, license suspension, sr22 filing

If your Nebraska driver's license has been suspended or revoked because of a DUI, you must purchase SR22 insurance to prove to the State that all of the vehicles you own are insured. If you do not own any vehicles, then you will be required to purchase non-owner SR22 insurance. A non-owner SR22 policy will allow you to drive any vehicle that is lent to you, except for vehicles owned by household members.

Once you purchase your non-owner SR22 insurance policy, your insurance company will issue the non-owner SR22 form. Ask them to file it electronically. If they refuse to do so, you or they can hand deliver it or mail it to the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Be aware that the DMV will not accept SR22 filings by fax.

If your SR22 requirement is due to a DUI, then you will need to keep your SR22 on file for 3 years from the date of your citation. If you fail to maintain your SR22 insurance for this long, then your driver's license will be suspended again.

It is important to find a non-owner SR22 policy that you can live with. To access the best SR22 prices available in Nebraska, enter your zip code here:

Nebraska Non-Owner SR22 Insurance and Ignition Interlock Law

As of January 1, 2012, Nebraska allows DUI offenders to waive their right to an Administrative License Revocation hearing and to apply for an Ignition Interlock Permit instead. You will need to purchase SR22 insurance in order to qualify for an Ignition Interlock Permit. Be aware that a non-owner SR22 insurance policy is only intended for people who do not own a vehicle and who do not have regular access to a vehicle in their household. So, in order to participate in the ignition interlock program, one would need to purchase a regular SR22 insurance policy, as opposed to a non-owner SR22 insurance policy.
