Vermont Non Owner SR22 Insurance Information

DUI laws and penalties, fines, license suspension, sr22 filing

The State of Vermont requires certain drivers to file an SR22 form with the DMV. Possible reasons for an SR22 filing include, but are not limited to:

  • DUI
  • Operating without mandatory insurance
  • Unsatisfied Judgment

The SR22 form serves as proof of future financial responsibility. As long as you have an SR22 form on file, the DMV knows that you are insured and will be financially responsible in the event of a future accident.

In order to obtain an SR22 form, one must purchase SR22 insurance, which is also known as "financial responsibility insurance." The SR22 form must be issued directly by an insurance company authorized to do business in Vermont.

If you do not own or have regular access to a vehicle, you may be able to purchase non-owner SR22 insurance and file a non-owner SR22 form.

A Vermont SR22 requirement lasts for a minimum of three years. If SR22 coverage is interrupted for any reason, your driver's license will be suspended until a new SR22 form is filed.

Vermont Non-Owner SR22 Insurance and Ignition Interlock Licenses:

If your driver's license has been suspended due to a DUI, and you plan to apply for an ignition interlock license, realize that you will need to file a traditional SR22, not a non-owner SR22. In order to install an ignition interlock, you must own or have regular access to a vehicle, so as long as you are driving with an ignition interlock, you cannot carry non-owner SR22 insurance.
